MAKER’S INFLUENCES

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been a maker of things. My mother was a dressmaker, and my father was a tailor and landscape painter, both of whom played an influential role in teaching and encouraging me in sewing, tailoring, pattern making and apparel design. Additionally, who can forget those joyful kinder days of cutting, pasting, drawing and painting which has never ceased. During the 80’s and 90’s I had a lot of fun expressing my creativity through fashion by designing and making my own clothes, which continued throughout the early years of motherhood where I would make clothes and costumes for my children. I also immersed myself in quilt-making, hand embroidery, dried floral arrangements/installations, and a variety of other crafts.

I have always had a deep love and appreciation for nature and working with plants. My grandparents played a key role in demonstrating to me the art of simple living. They were incredibly knowledgeable in organic vegetable/fruit growing methods, recycling waste, reusing materials, and were enthusiastic gardeners. They taught me to appreciate the beauty and benefits of plants.

These major influences eventually led me to pursue my passion in studies of Art and Design.

My adoration into the fascinating history of textile design has led me to travel and explore various faraway countries where I invested time into learning ancient textile techniques from local artisans. This greatly enhanced my understanding and appreciation for handmade craftsmanship and their primitive methods.

I must also mention my extensive library of art and design books, who have been my constant companions for knowledge and inspiration.
